Financial advisers sour slightly on alternatives

Financial advisers are predicting that traditional investment products will begin to push back against alternative investments in the next few years after a long retreat. While 41% of advisers enjoyed double-digit growth in alternative investments this year—compared to 57% last year—there is declining optimism about the industry's prospects and some of its newer, much-ballyhooed offerings, according to a new study by Morningstar and Research magazine.

Day 1: Islamic Housing Finance is set for a major boost over the next few years largely because of several developments in key markets worldwide. These include the introduction of enabling mortgage laws; regulation of mortgages; social and financial inclusion policies; the demand for affordable social housing; greater product differentiation; equal tax treatment for Islamic mortgage products; the emergence of a young and growing population in many Muslim countries; and opportunities for mortgage securitisation.
Day 2: Islamic Real Estate Financing similarly continues to flourish especially in the core markets of the GCC countries and Malaysia. However, Islamic financial institutions Day 2 (IFIs) and their investors continue to look for new opportunities especially to add value and diversify portfolio risk. The US realty market has been traditionally an attractive option for IFIs, with the first movers such as Arcapita Bank still maintaining a healthy portfolio of real estate assets comprising commercial developments; multifamily projects; assisted living developments etc., totalling over US$1.5bn.
