iShares, the exchange-traded fund provider arm of Barclays Global Investors, has launched three new small cap iShares ETFs, adding coverage of small-cap stocks in the US, Japan and Asia excluding Japan to its existing products covering the European market.

UK firm offers commodity, power hedge funds

UK-based Ebullio Capital Management has launched a commodity hedge fund, and plans to launch a power and emissions vehicle sometime in the third quarter. The Ebullio Commodity Fund, an event-driven offering, debuted in January with USD4 million in partner capital. The fund opened to outside investors on May 1. It returned 27% in the first quarter, according to Monica Kotzee, marketing director.

Edinburgh-based hedge and traditional fund boutique SVM Asset Management more than doubled profits in 2007, despite a tough stock market environment, thanks to new business wins. The firm, headed by high-profile investor Colin McLean, saw pretax profit rise to GBP2.6 million in 2007, from GBP1.2 million in 2006, according to a regulatory filing obtained by Reuters.

Star manager Dwight Sipprelle is winding down his USD1.2bn global credit fund and retiring from active money management. The founder of New York-based Arx Investment Management, who previously spent 16 years at Morgan Stanley, plans to shut down the Arx Global High Yield Master Securities Fund, which has gained 150 per cent since its launch in February 2002, by June 30. His brother and fellow Morgan Stanley alumnus, Scott Sipprelle, shut down his own firm Copper Arch late last year.

New York's Drake Management has finally decided to close down its USD2.5bn Global Opportunities Fund, which lost 25 per cent in 2007, having already suspended investor redemptions in December. It will wrap up the unwinding by the first quarter of 2009 but investors can expect to get the bulk of their money back by the end of this year.
